No, unfortunately, Malibu rum is not vegan. This is due to the non-vegan-friendly process of the sugar in the rum. However, other flavors of Malibu may be vegan, read below to find out more. 

Why Is Malibu Original (Coconut) not vegan?

We’re not exactly sure why Malibu Original Coconut isn’t vegan, but we do know from information on their website that there are no animal products in Malibu and it’s likely that it’s not vegan due to cross-contamination with animal products in the sugar manufacturing process.

Here’s what their US and global website had to say. 

“Malibu Original (Coconut): We do not add animal derivatives into our products, however, one of our sugar suppliers uses a process that is not considered vegan-friendly. While this is a common practice in the sugar industry, it unfortunately also means we are unable to call Malibu Original (Coconut) suitable for a vegan diet.”

However, on the UK Malibu website, it’s a slightly different story. 

The same messaging appears, but it’s only applicable to the Malibu Original Coconut product, and it goes on to say that “The other products in our portfolio are however considered to be suitable for a vegan diet.”

This is also reiterated by the brand’s Twitter account in the UK, which said “Malibu original is not vegan due to the sugar but our Malibu cans, flavours (Watermelon & Passionfruit) and Strawberry Spritz are vegan.”

Final Thoughts

Malibu Original Coconut is not vegan friendly, wherever you are in the world. However, other flavors of Malibu including Malibu Black, Malibu Pineapple, Malibu Red, Malibu Passion Fruit, Malibu Mango, and Malibu Watermelon are vegan in the UK and Europe because they are manufactured and bottled in Spain. However, these flavors may not be vegan in places outside of Europe such as the US, because they are bottled and produced in Barbados, and it’s unknown whether the same process for refining the sugar is used in Europe.
